Harvesting cut flowers

In a company where cut flowers (examples are chrysanthemums, gerberas, lisianthus etc.) are grown, the harvesting of the flowers takes place in a greenhouse.
Depending on the flower species, machines are used, or it is done completely by hand.
In a flower greenhouse, it is always quite warm, and the humidity is also on the high side.

Harvesting work in a flower greenhouse mainly consists of learning the dexterity to do it well. As soon as you have mastered that, you can work on speed.

Sorting cut flowers

The flowers harvested in the greenhouse usually enter the processing area via a conveyor belt or a self-propelled cart. The flowers are sorted in the processing area, usually using machines. The flowers are packed, put in a box and further prepared for shipment to the customer.

Here, too, learning dexterity is an important factor.

Growing plants

When it comes to the cultivation of plants, for example orchids, in a greenhouse, the work usually consists of:

  • Planting the new plants.
  • During the months that the plants grow, working on these plants, such as placing support sticks or removing flowers etc.
  • When the plants are ready to go to the customers, packing them and preparing them for shipment.

Harvesting soft fruit

As a result of new types and new methods of lighting in greenhouses, the cultivation of soft fruit in greenhouses is increasingly moving from seasonal work to (nearly) year-round work.

With strawberries, for example, that is even more the case than with raspberries. With strawberries, the majority of the work consists of harvesting (picking) the strawberries. Dexterity is very important for this.

Other work with soft fruit

Examples of other work with soft fruit are:

  • Pulling the flower clusters through, so that the strawberries hang in the right place for harvesting.
  • Planting new plants.
  • Removing and disposing of old plants and preparing for the planting of new plants.

Other work

In addition to the crops as described above, there are also other types of work and other crops.
